A look at what keeps text based MUDs active

In a day and age where gorgeous graphics draw in the big crowds, one journalist asks the question, "What keeps people coming back to text based MUDs after all this time. Those that still play, what are your thoughts?

It's like the Radio - the pictures (in my head) are better than on television! I guess that only works well for persons with, say, an imagination - so automatically that will favour those who do things like read (fiction), perhaps that explains the correlation between works of fantasy and a related representation (ideally with the author's permission!) in a MUD.
