If you want to use git you can clone the git repository and update with git pull which does a git fetch + automerge. I wouldn't recommend using git, however, unless you want to take part in the c++ core development because git is a really complex SCM tool and has its pitfalls that might lead to broken Mac versions in your case and a bunch of annoyances for you.
If you have finished your makefile adaptions etc. we should try to merge your changes to the makefiles etc. into the main git source tree. This makes updates easier.
