So, given a conversation with Heiko earlier, I have decided to go ahead and create this thread to gauge the interest in changing the main client icons into something that many who use find more aesthetically pleasing.

Here is what I came up with. (All icons are GPL compliant.)

I'd say they need an overhaul. Can you make a variables icon?

I never actually made them, they were just a set I found that are free to use.

Not sure which to use for a variable icon, though. The $ sign, perhaps?

The icon theme needs to be consistent, what about all of the other icons used everywhere in Mudlet?

In that icon set, the one that is just four white lines stacked on top of each other would be an alright sign for variables.

It might be easy enough to get someone with some graphics skills to make something like "X=" or "f(x)" in a similar blue and white style. Unfortunately, I am not that someone. I don't see anything that really screams variable to me in that set.

I would be willing to give this a try. I am taking classes right now for graphic design.
First thing I would need is a list of all of the icons we need and what you want them to look like. This way I can go down the line and make them all similar.

It's a non-starter. After chatting with both Heiko and Vadi, both are of the mind that there is just not enough interest in changing them and it seems most people are fine as they are.

You can always go ahead and design some, though! I'd be more than happy to provide a build with your own icons should you decide to do this.

Would be fun. What would you suggest for each?

Another thought is making mudlet able to use skins. This we can use different icons and colors for the skins.
