Ubuntu Trackpad Woes

Post by tsuujin »

I'm frustrated. I just bought a new laptop, which is absolutely awesome. However, when I installed Ubuntu I found that the trackpad it comes with isn't a standard synaptics device, it's an elantech trackpad. There is virtually no support in Ubuntu (or linux in general) for elantech, which means that I can't use any of the advanced functionality of the pad (which really is awesome, it's got multitouch up to three fingers).

The biggest blow is that this means I have to actually drag the scrollbar up and down manually in order to scroll a page, and use the forward and back arrows in order to navigate. I haven't had to do that since... like the 90's. It's so bad that I'm actually on Win7 now because I just can't cope without basic mouse navigation.

Thanks a lot, Samsung. If you'd just have installed a synaptic device I'd be in heaven now.

Could use PgUp and PgDown as well... but no trackpad does suck.

Um, maybe http://array.org/ubuntu/elantech.html can help?

Or, wait for 11.04. They definitely did do something with touchpad drivers - for several hours between updates, Xorg would completely crash if the touchpad was touched >.>
